You would have to create a new custom field of multi-select type and add all the options in.

You should then delete your existing one BUT be careful as this may have consequences for your existing contacts as the data will be lost. If you already have contact data saved in the drop-down, first export the contacts so you can perform an Update Import for all of your contacts to embed the new contact custom field correctly.
